Fans of Barbara Freethy and Susan Wiggs will devour this full length contemporary romantic tale of food and dogs, redemption and second chances by RITA award winner Barbara Samuel.
As a romantic teen, Tanya Bishop married a passionate, intense man who ultimately ended up nearly killing her more than once. When she finally killed him to save herself and her son, Tonio, she was sent to prison, and her son went into the custory of her husband’s cousin, Ramon Quezada, who runs a ranch for troubled boys. When Tanya is finally released, Ramon offers her a home and job, working in the kitchens of the ranch, where she can have a chance to develop a relationship again with her son—and maybe learn to love again herself. A highly emotional, uplifting story of second chances from a writer of rare power, The Last Chance Ranch is a timely and moving romantic novel.
The Last Chance Ranch eBook Barbara Samuel Ruth Wind
What I like about Barbara Samuels is how she is not afraid of taking up difficult topics. The heroine in this book was abused in the marriage she entered when she was very young and even if she divorced her husband and moved every three months with her son, her ex-husband found her and she had to kill him in self-defense. I think the laws - or the practice of those laws - of self defense have changed since this book was written, but the heroine of this book has to spend 11 years in prison. And not only that, she has to give her son up to a family member (cousin) of her ex-husband.It turns out that this husband runs a farm for criminal kids - and that he`s been secretly in love with the heroine since they were young. He allows her to move into his ranch as a kitchen-help so that she can be with her son without him knowing who she is. It`s not entirely clear why the son hasn`t been told about his mother but apparently it has to do with the dead ex-husband`s sisters.
Love slowly grows between the heroine with the mental scars and the hero with the big heart. It`s nice to see how protective he is towards the son but also how much he wants to help the heroine. It`s a lovely story, though a bit strange on some of the premises of the story. But if you can`t read about a heroine who`s been severely hurt, then this is not a book for you!

The Last Chance Ranch eBook Barbara Samuel Ruth Wind Reviews
The book had a realistic story to tell and kept my interest throughout the book. Hard to stop reading as the book was fast acting and very real.
I absolutely love ALL of the books written by this Author. As usual once I opened the book and started on Chapter One I did not want to put the book down.
Such a waste of a potentially great story.Way too much of the "sexy looks" and the "hot sexy eyes" business and not enough character building. I read a great book of hers about a rescue dog and thought this sounded like a great read. NOT!
There were parts of this book, that almost had me in tears. Most of the other reviewers have covered what I wanted to say about this book.
I was torn between giving it four or five stars. I liked the book. I liked it a lot, but my definition of love, is a book I can't put down, and while there were moments in this book, that I felt I couldn't put it down, there were other times when I had to put it down, simply because I could relate to Tanya (so perhaps that is a reason it should be 5 stars).
The characters felt 3 dimensional, and there were times, when I felt like I wanted to move into the ranch, simply to spend time with the housekeeper (her name escapes me as I write this).
I've been searching for more books written by one of my favorite authors, Barbara O'Neal, and was surprised to find that she has written piles of books as Barbara Samuel, long before her most recent (and amazingly good) novels. So I ordered The Last Chance Ranch on my and loved it. I live in New Mexico and so frequently authors fail to hit the mark by over-romanticizing the location and its people, but Samuel (O'Neal) is obviously one of us. The characters are believable and their conflicts and resolutions aren't over-simplified. I found myself crying for these characters, both in sorrow and in joy. I consider myself a serious literature reader, but these books are a great read and very well done.
As one knows and loves New Mexico and Colorado, I savor the textures of her locales and her love of their flavors and people. The story is simple, and anguished. The love theme is almost simplistically added in chunks, and therefore somewhat jarring and blatant. This is an early effort, and she's gotten a lot better. I'm rereading her seven RITA-award books next. Not bad, just young and earnest.
I admit to reading as many of this authors books on kindle as I have been able to get my hands on. And I recommend all her books. She is a real storyteller. Now, this book was very thought provoking and really made me think. The lead character is truly a victim but she is not laid low, she fights her way back with grace and of course, the love of a good man. This is a gritty, emotional, romance, with a lot of heart. It describes how abuse and violence can lead anyone to do unthinkable things, it's about a woman on her own, a woman not helped by the so called safety nets put up by society. Tugs on the heart strings, a very good read.
