The Intrepid Golfer A Story about Loss Love and Overcoming the Odds edition by K Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks

I just finished reading K.D. Anderson's novel, The Intrepid Golfer: a story about loss, love, and overcoming the odds. Based on the unlikely premise of a novice golfer who acquires an amazing gift for the sport when he is struck by lightning during a friendly round of golf, it is the story of Japanese American Kenji Watanabe, who takes a very early retirement from his family business after the death of his life-long companion and beloved wife. He approaches golf with the same fierce determination he has shown in business. Before long he is able to make a fourth with three more-experienced friendly men. After his near-death experience, Kenji is determined to make a contribution to society, and his friends help him come up with a plan for using his new talent in a way that helps others.
Along the way, he meets the beautiful Lilly Yamada and they seem to have an immediate connection, but the wealthy widower doesn't know if he trusts her motives, and she is not accustomed to being the pursuer in a relationship. And anyway, he is entirely engrossed in putting his gift to work by polishing up his game.
Kenji and his golfing buddies have formed a strong bond between themselves, and when he goes through a terrible loss and threatens to give up on his ambitions, their commitment to him is played out as they rally around him.
When this book was recommended by a friend, I almost passed it up because I am not a golfer and not really looking to know more about it at this stage of my life, but it was the subtitle that appealed to me. I was quickly drawn into the story of this life-battered man who through strength of character manages to pull himself up in the face of tragedy and loss. I found myself fascinated with the glimpses of what really goes into the game that is something more than just a game to so many people I know, and eagerly cheering Kenji in his battles to beat the odds.
Anderson sets the story in Hawaii and gives such great descriptions of the beautiful setting that I feel as if I had been there. Then, in the strong and gentle Kenji, he creates a character that is impossible not to care about and finishes with a satisfying ending that still leaves me hoping he will continue the story.

The Intrepid Golfer A Story about Loss Love and Overcoming the Odds edition by K Anderson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. The story is interesting, and different from any book I have read. Definitely a lot about golf. It is also very inspiring.
Golf is good, golf in Hawaii is better. Golf with a twist about people and what appears to be weaknesses, turned into strength is better, add a bit of love and you have a nice easy read.
Although the title suggests the story is about golf, it is about much more than that. I'd better admit up front that the author, Ken, is my brother-in-law, and I am not a golfer. In July 2011, Ken sent me an early draft manuscript, asking for feedback. I can't write, but I can recognize a good story line, and the draft had one. The best I could do was nitpick the small stuff. Ken wasn't discouraged by my silliness, and I think he and my sister, BJ, still love me. The multiple edits they did over the ensuing months have produced a very well-written, entertaining, and heart-warming story with an ending that left me feeling happy with tears in my eyes. If the story were made into a movie, it would be "G" rated.
Just finished reading the Intrepid Golfer and loved it! Having the setting in Hawaii was wonderful, especially since my husband and I just visited there for the first time this last Christmas with our whole family! The plot and the characters in the book were very well done. Ken wrote this in a way that made it hard to put the book down because you wanted to see right away what happens next! Especially great for golfers as the story goes into detail with the golf games that a golfer will enjoy. But written in a way that even non golfers will greatly enjoy as well. This is one of those books that goes on my list of "not wanting it to end"!!!
Golf is not a game I play or even care to watch. However the plot intrigued me and it captured me. In my opinion this book is not about golf but about life, love, friendships and tenacity. I actually had to get up at 200 AM to finish the final third of the book. My biggest disappointment was the book ended, happily I might add, but I wanted to continue to be part of the character's life. Towards the last third of the book it was at times an emotional roller coaster. I was there on the golf course and in the bedroom and at dinner. If you like a story that has a bit of history, a bit of romance, a lot of character, then grab this book, sit down and hold on. Wonderful story one of the best I've read lately. Thank you Mr. Anderson.
Even though I've never played golf, this story held my attention all the way through. The characters are strongly developed from the beginning. I found myself rooting for Kenji from the lightning strike on. The golf sequences were so well written that I couldn't help but read them, even though I have no knowledge of the game. Some of the passages in this book are so poignant, that I would match them against any novelist I have read. The ending surprised me; I thought I had it figured out but had it totally wrong.
I did not enjoy this book at all! It was not inspirational or uplifting, I found it annoying and superficial.

All the characters were either saints or sinners and if they were sinners, after their epiphany they quickly became saints. There was enough "false goodness" to last a lifetime forgiveness, support, understanding, respect, generosity, etc. There was unnecessary backstory on some characters, tangents on others, excessive pondering (in advance of a decision) by all but in the end uber happy ending!

I finished this story because I was more than 30% into the book before I realized that this was it, it wasn't going to get any better. This story was irritating and trite and I'm glad it's finished.

It could have been good.
